We
were spawned from the GCSE Astronomy eveningclass
at Llandrillo College, which started about three years
ago, and Dave Jackson was our inspired tutor. The
astronomy students are automatic members in the year
they are studying.
At the time it was generally agreed that there were
a lot of amateur astronomers along the North Wales
coastal area who would appreciate a society of their
own. In April 2001 the nucleus of the society was
formed, with Dave as the Chairman and before we knew
it, the membership had grown to nearly 40.
We have visiting speakers on a regular basis and outings
to places of interest and visits to other societies,
as well as holding Observations Nights on the second
Tuesday of each month at a local hostelry. People
can bring their telescopes to these evenings, and
there are always one or two large telescopes available
for members to view through. There is even a telescope
available for members to hire at a nominal fee. This
group is so successful that a large number meets even
in the summer months when the skies are too light
to view anything worthwhile.
This society was formed for amateur astronomers of
all ages and levels of expertise. Many of our members
are simply interested in viewing the stars on a dark
night through a good telescope, but we also have several
astro photographers of an extremely high standard
… and are about to boast two home observatories that
will soon be completed. Not bad for a society that
is only fifteen months old!
Our Chairman this year is Dave Smith (Tel: 01745 571085,
e-mail dsmith2859@aol.com
and he has a strong, enthusiastic committee supporting
him. The membership goes from strength to strength
and is now over 60 and rising. If you are interested
in joining the society
please contact Brian Woosnam on 01492 533264, or by
