NWGAS Minutes -- Saturday, 24th April, 1999

The meeting was held at the invitation of Andrew Bate, at Hatton Farm, Waverton, Cheshire. C/o Chester Astronomical Society. We were once again privileged to share the hospitality (and tea, coffee and biccies) of Andrew and his family at their magnificent farmhouse near Chester. After the meeting, Andrew amazed us with a demonstration of his customised water rockets; finned PET bottles part-filled with water and then pressurised to over 100psi. On release, it was calculated that they accelerated to 200km/hr within a second and flew well over 300m! This was followed by a tour of his superb observatory and a preview of a new 14" Newtonian under construction. Thank you, Andrew.

Richard Sargent chaired the meeting. Societies in attendance were; Chester AS, Macclesfield AS, Altrincham AS, Manchester AS and Liverpool AS. Apologies for absence were received from Southport AS, Salford AS. Ron Kelley was away, Tony Cross was ill and Michael Oates was attending a SPA meeting in London.. Richard appealed to those societies in the far flung corners of the region to offer to host these NWGAS meetings. They were poorly represented at present and it was agreed by reps present that to travel to Furness, Blackpool or Anglesey once in a while was no hardship for the representatives of the more centralised societies. Please let me know who is interested - Sec.

Minutes of the last NWGAS meeting held at Salford University, 16th January, 1999.

It was noted that the attendees at the Salford meeting had not been recorded in the Minutes. KJK apologised and said that the notes of that meeting had gone astray. It was also reminded that it had been intended to invite more distant societies to host NWGAS meetings, the argument being that if provision of a meeting room could be arranged, NWGAS delegates would be ready and willing to meet elsewhere in the region. Blackpool, Anglesey, Preston and Furness being obvious potential venues.

May Bank Holiday at Jodrell: Cherry Moss (good to see you back Cherry) said that Sylvia Chaplain had already made arrangements for the weekend and it was now too late to arrange NWGAS attendance.

  Campaign for Dark Skies

There being no offers to take on the role of CfDS representative, this position was still vacant. Bob Mizon is now on the Internet and could be e-mailed directly ( See Web pages below)

Quite unexpectedly, as CfDS was being discussed, Mr Michael Jones, Conservative candidate for Tattenhall, called to canvas Andrew Bate for his vote. Mr Jones was asked to join the meeting and the case for good lighting schemes was put to him. He left, somewhat shaken, after promising to take an interest in new lighting projects in the area in view of our concerns. The moral being, get to know your local council representatives and put your case directly to them, face to face. Perseverance pays off.

Richard emphasised the importance that all societies had a CfDS representative and to be pro-active as well as reactive. There is to be a new park & ride service for Chester and this in part included a lit trackway from the outskirts of the City to the centre. Already Chester AS had approached the engineers with a case to install proper lighting and although a reply had not yet been received, Richard Sargent was optimistic.

In further discussion, it was pointed out that light pollution was severely aggravated by air pollution and that in the countryside (in the example quoted, of France,) even nearby streetlights did not result in the backscatter that plagued suburban astronomy in the UK.

  Federation of Astronomical Societies

Ron Kelley, NWGAS FAS representative was not in attendance. Apologies for absence were received. Via e-mail to KJK, Ron had said to beware of a certain group of TV programme makers, Maverick TV, that were gaining a dubious reputation for cheap laughs at the expense of the amateur astronomical community.

Regarding PPARC grants for amateur astronomical societies, it was asked if joint grants were available for members of the NWGAS. Liverpool AS are currently applying for a grant with which to buy telescopes to encourage schools participation.

  Starwatch UK

Still a good number of hits for a project that's no more. :(

  CfDS

Bob Mizon, the BAA co-ordinator for the Campaign for Dark Skies now has an email address (at long last!!). This makes him much more accessible to many people and will lessen the number of emails I get that I can't answer. His address is... This site has had a bit of a face lift, and all back issues of the Newsletter are now online.

  NAW96

Since the demise of the RGO, the NAW96 web site has disappeared from the Cambridge server. I was given no warning, and only found out when I tried to update the site. So I have moved it to the server that holds all my other web sites. The url is http://www.u-net.com/ph/naw96/ I have moved the site in case people still want to see what it was all about. It also holds some good information for beginners. Now that it is under my control, I will be able to monitor the number of visits the site gets, if I find that it is not being used I will close it down.

  William Lassell

As part of the NAW96 site I had a separate web site for William Lassell. That now has it's own url at... http://www.u-net.com/ph/lassell/ This is the only web site that exists with any information about William Lassell and is therefore a valuable resource, and I will keep this site going.

  Notes

Updates - Please send me updated notices of meetings and any corrections to the pages so that I can keep your web pages up to date.

  Total Eclipse '99

KJK said that quite by chance he was going to be observing the eclipse from the same Black Sea resort in Bulgaria as several members from Liverpool AS, including Eric Strach. The MAS will have members spread out across Europe; in Cornwall, France (a large party), Hungary (one member had recently bought a 6-berth camper van and GPS system to ensure he got there, on track), Bulgaria and Turkey. Liverpool AS had people in Cornwall, Austria and Bulgaria and Iran. Salford AS were planning a rail trip to Cornwall. Macclesfield AS are organising a coach trip to France but will have a telescope set up at Jodrell Bank to show the 91% partial eclipse to visitors. Dr Ian Morison from JB and Macc.AS will be observing in the Scilly Isles. Overall NWGAS members will be represented all along the European and Asia Minor track of totality.

Representatives from Macc AS, Manchester AS, Liverpool AS and Chester AS are due to give public talks covering aspects of the spectacle and safe ways of observing and photographing the eclipse. What about other societies?

This is an ideal opportunity to liaise between societies with the potential of mutual collaboration. Please do this directly, there is no time via the NWGAS meetings. And don't forget the best eclipse photograph competition. Contributions to Mike Oates please for the web pages.

Any other business and updates to these Minutes
