NWGAS Minutes -- Saturday, 16th January, 1999

The meeting was held in room 542 at the Maxwell Building of Salford University, C/o Salford AS.

Apologies for absence were received from Macclesfield AS, Southport AS and Altrincham AS.

Minutes of the last NWGAS meeting

Minutes of the last NWGAS meeting held at Pex Hill Observatory, 10th October, 1998.

Minutes were accepted. Gerard Gilligan (Liverpool AS) said that Peter Wilson had tended his resignation as NWGAS representative for the BAAs Campaign for Dark Skies. Peter's letter of 8th October, referring to the CfDS section of the Minutes was read, together with KJK's reply of 16th Oct. Peter's resignation was regretted and KJK was asked to send a letter in acknowledgement of his contribution to the Group.

May Bank Holiday at Jodrell: This matter was raised briefly but in Cherry Moss's absence it was decided to postpone further discussion. It is therefore accepted that the NWGAS will not be attending the Jodrell Bank Holiday weekend this year unless societies want to make specific individual arrangements.

  Campaign for Dark Skies

Peter Wilson has resigned as NWGAS representative. Interested members of the NWGAS societies are invited to take over this important role. Also, owing to ill health, Robert Fletcher can no longer represent the Manchester area for the CfDS.

Gerard Gilligan reminded the meeting that the role of the NWGAS representative was to coordinate information fed from the area reps and to pass this on to Bob Mizon at the BAA. The area reps responsibility was to liase with local lighting engineers and councils and to put forward the case for sympathetic lighting, especially re new building projects. Each society was encouraged to have a rep to feed info to Bob and to promote the CfDS within that society.

In the discussion that followed there was a feeling that CfDS was successfully swaying local councils towards the more economic full cut-off lighting on new projects. However, the trend to floodlight city centre public buildings was continuing, unabated especially in the run up to the millennium celebrations.

It was thought that the public were generally so oblivious to the beauty of the night sky that they were unaware of the impact that increased lighting was having. Kath Redford expressed her opinion that even in astronomical societies, there was apathy re the continued increase in outdoor lighting.

  Federation of Astronomical Societies

Ron Kelley, NWGAS FAS representative was out of the country. Apologies for absence were received.

* Societies that have their own web site.

Note the high number of hits that Macclesfield AS has been getting. The figures for all the web sites are generally higher than normal.

StarWatch UK: I received an email from the FAS to ask me to put a link from the WUK web page to a notice on the FAS site. This has been done. The notice is on page http://www.fedastro.demon.co.uk/starwatch.html and is reproduced below.

StarWatch UK was set up in 1995 as an extension to the Japanese and American light pollution monitoring programmes. The main collaborators behind the UK programme were Margaret Penston (Royal Astronomical Society and the RGO at Cambridge), Barrie Jones (the Open University), Derek McNally (University College London and the Association for Astronomy Education) and Pam Spence (Federation of Astronomical Societies). The programme was launched at the 1995 FAS Cambridge Convention and publicised through both the FAS and Astronomy Now.
Many people sent in their observations, but unfortunately, very little data reduction has been able to be done. With the demise of the RGO, there is also now no obvious central address to collate observations.

Discussions are ongoing to try and find some organisation willing to undertake the project. Until this has been sorted out, however, the FAS advises observers NOT to send in further observations to the RGO.

Other Notes Altrincham & District AS have a new web site... http://www.portlock.demon.co.uk/adasmain.htm this now means 7 out of the 12 member societies now have their own web site, a trend which I hope will continue. I now have more information about Gwynedd AS including forthcoming meetings, which is now on the web page. Salford's web page has not been updated for some time, so I took the liberty of adding this years meetings to the NWGAS page from a list I obtained at a Salford meeting in Dec, I also used a map for directions to get here today.

WWW Updates Please send updated notices of meetings and any corrections to the printouts (handed out at the Salford meeting) so that I can keep the web pages up to date.

  Total Eclipse '99

KJK said that quite by chance he was going to be observing the August 11th eclipse from the same Black Sea resort in Bulgaria as several members from Liverpool AS, including Eric Strach. Where were other societies going? The MAS will have members spread out across Europe; in Cornwall, France (a large party), Hungary, Bulgaria and Turkey. Liverpool AS had people in Cornwall, Austria and Bulgaria. Salford AS were planning a rail trip to Cornwall. What about the other societies?

This is an ideal opportunity to liaise between societies with the potential of mutual collaboration. Please do this directly, there is no time via the NWGAS meetings. And don't forget the best eclipse photograph competition. Contributions to Mike Oates please for the web pages.

Any other business and updates to these Minutes

1. Reminder: Richard Sargent invited interested parties in the NWGAS membership willing to come up with questions for inter-society quizzes, to contact him. He said that it was always a problem getting enough fresh questions together and perhaps this task could be shared to the mutual benefit of NWGAS member societies holding quizzes. A shared pool of questions would be very useful.

2. Kevin Kilburn's paper, 'Dr Plot and the Amazing Double Sunset', is to be published in the February edition of Astronomy & Geophysics, the Journal of the Royal Astronomical Society. This concerns the archeoastronomy regarding the alignment of the midsummer sunset, as seen from Leek Parish Church, with a hill on the Staffordshire-Cheshire border. See MAS web pages.

3. It is with deepest regret that we have learned of the death in March, following a long illness, of Dennis Moss, Cherry's husband. Dennis was instrumental in the formation and ongoing success of the Macclesfield AS and will be greatly missed.

4. Dr. Allan Chapman's mother, Lilly, died suddenly in February. KJK and Mr and Mrs Tony Cross represented the Manchester AS and NWGAS at the funeral in Clifton, Salford.

  Next NWGAS meeting

11am, Saturday, 24th April, 1999, at the invitation of Andrew Bate, at Hatton Farm, Waverton, Cheshire. C/o Chester Astronomical Society.
